Botox and Dysport
Botox and Dysport are two types of neuromodulators we use here at Living Well in Beaverton, to relax creases and frowns in the face. It is a simple, non-surgical treatment which is administered by our highly trained and experienced providers. The treatment temporarily smoothes moderate to severe frown lines, “crow’s feet” and other upper regions of the face where lines are present in people between 18 and 65. During treatment, very low doses of neuromodulating medication are administered by injecting directly into the muscles that cause frown lines. Treatments are usually done in 10-20 minutes with little to no recovery time afterward.
How Do Neuromodulators Work?
Moderate to severe lines form over time as a result of muscle activity. Botox or Dysport is injected into the muscles between your brows. It works by blocking the transmission of nerve impulses to the injected muscles; this reduces the activity of the muscles that cause the frown lines to form.
Not only can neuromodulators be used to diminish existing lines, but it can also be used as a preventative measure for lines that will inevitably come. As an example, imagine creasing a piece of paper- the more often the paper is creased in the same place, the more evident that crease becomes. Botox or Dysport treatments can be used to limit the amount the skin is creased.
What to Expect After Botox or Dysport
Although the results are visible, a treatment with either neuromodulator will not radically change your facial appearance or make you look as if you “had work done.” The muscle activity that causes the lines is simply reduced, so you can still frown or look surprised. The wrinkles and creases will just be significantly diminished. If you choose not to continue treatments, the moderate to severe frown lines between your brows will gradually return to where they were before treatment.
Following Dysport or Botox treatments, you may see a marked improvement to the treated area within days. Lines continue to improve for up to a month, and results can last for up to 4 months. In clinical trials, nearly 90% of men and women rated the improvement in their appearance as moderate to better one month after treatment. Results may vary.
