Common Questions About Chemical Peels

What are Chemical Peels?

Slow or irregular cell turnover helps contribute to many common skin problems.  Chemical peels contain active ingredients that stimulate the shedding of the top layer of the epidermis. When the dead skin cells are removed, a new layer of skin is produced that is fresh and rejuvenated giving an appearance of younger, healthier skin.

Why Choose Chemical Peels?

A chemical peel is an affordable, fast, relatively painless (comparable to a sunburn) treatment that makes a visible difference in the texture of the skin.

What Conditions do Chemical Peels Help Treat?
Chemical peels are proven effective in treating problems with acne, hyperpigmentation, and dull, wrinkled skin.

What Benefits Can You Expect to See After Having a Chemical Peel?
Smoothing of fine lines, reduction in sebum overproduction and acne breakouts, the fading of age spots and other irregular pigmentation and an overall smoother, healthier and brighter texture.

Will Receiving a Chemical Hurt?
The peels that we offer at Living Well are all relatively comfortable procedures. You will feel a slight stinging sensation or a feeling of warmth on the skin during the peel. Discomfort usually decreases with the use of a hand held fan. Your practitioner will strive to keep you comfortable throughout the treatment.

What Should I Expect After a Peel Procedure?
Each individual’s reaction is different and is patient dependent. There are many factors that contribute to the amount of peeling that will occur or whether or not the skin will peel at all. Your practitioner will be sure to inform you on the expectations of your peel. In general, you can expect some tightness in the first few days. Sometimes redness and symptoms similar to a sunburn will be present. Any areas of pigmentation may also look darker. With our VI Peel, peeling should begin on day 2 or 3 and be finished by day 7. There can be a fairly significant “slough” with our VI Peel treatment. Adhering to your pre and post procedure instructions are vital during the weeks before and following your peel to ensure optimal results.

How long does the treatment take?
30 minutes or less

When should I expect to see results from my peel?
Results from your peel will differ depending on the type of peel and if it is a series versus a single peel. Our VI Peel treatment takes about four days after you finish peeling for the skin to return to its normal pH and to see the final effects. The skin will look luminous and glowing. Hyperpigmentation will be improved or eliminated, depending on the amount of damage. Tone and texture will be improved for a more youthful, radiant appearance.

How many treatments will I need?
Your practitioner will evaluate your skin, as well as your goals and expectations and make an appropriate recommendation for ongoing skin care. The VI Peel may be repeated as often as every two weeks initially, if necessary, for damaged skin and problematic skin. Our recommendation for maintenance of average skin would be once every three months to prevent damage and aging of the skin.. Our unique Eye and Lip peel is done in a series of 3-4 treatments and may be done as many as two times per year.
