IPL Photofacial

At Living Well Institute for Skin and Laser in Hillsboro, Oregon, we offer the most state-of-the-art Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatment on the market today. The Palomar Icon treats much lighter sun damage that many older devices do not, making each treatment more effective than patients would receive if they underwent a series with older technology.

A photofacial, also known as photo rejuvenation, is a non-invasive IPL treatment that gently, safely, and effectively treats sun damage and photo-aging. IPL treatments reduce redness, dark spots, and soften signs of aging. IPL treatments also correct brown spots, sun damage, irregular skin pigmentation, as well as diminish rosacea, wrinkles, laxity, enlarged pores, and spider veins.

How IPL Treatments Work

This advanced technology delivers a broad spectrum of light to the skin through gentle pulses. Each flash of light transmits energy that targets brown spots and discoloration. When the targeted areas absorb the light, they darken and the surrounding skin may appear pink. This appearance lasts a few hours or a few days, depending on the patient’s individual healing process. In the weeks following the treatment, the darkened spots will flake off and fade while facial capillaries and diffused redness will decrease. The body’s natural healing process will begin to rejuvenate the sun-damaged skin, providing an overall more youthful, healthy appearance. Treatments are performed in a series of 3 to 6  for best results.  Each session includes face and neck.

Are IPL Treatments Right for Me?

While IPL can help a variety of different skin conditions and can aid many people who have different skin types and tones, fair skin types are ideal for Intense Pulsed Light treatments. This is because IPL works by using specific wavelengths that target both hemoglobin and melanin in the skin. The waves pass through the skin and are absorbed, which fragments melanin pigments. Because fragmenting melanin makes surface color less visible, effects are more desirable if there is less melanin to begin with. Removing light hair and achieving a clear complexion is most effective for Types One through Four on the Fitzpatrick Scale.

As with any medical skin procedure, it is important that this treatment be performed by an experienced professional for the best result and to minimize the chance for complications.
